Electrical Conductor Material is the materials which use to transmit power one end to another end. So the electrical powerlines are constructed which such materials which can use carries the electrical power to sending end to receiving end is known as a conductor. When we consider about the electrical conductors there are special features of it. The electrical conductivity is one of the most important parameters of this kind of materials. In Properties of Engineering Materials, we have discussed about the features of these kinds of material in general engineering applications.
Today we are going to discuss several properties of conductor materials and 5 different types of materials which commonly use to conduct electricity and its properties.
Properties of Conductor Materials:
The proper selection of the conductor materials is really important to consider and following are the properties of the conductor materials.
- The conductivity of the electricity of the conductor is higher in conductor materials
- The specific gravity is low
- The cost of long distance should be low when comparing the economic factors
- The conductor materials should have the high mechanical strength to stand still for the longer time period.
There are several conductors which are used commonly for electrical power industry such as Copper, Aluminum, Steel Core Aluminum, Galvanized steel conductor and cadmium copper conductors.
1. Copper:
Following are the facts about the characteristic of copper considering its qualities
- Contain higher electrical conductivity
- Got greater tensile strength
- The availability of copper is less.
- The cost of high compared with other conducting materials
- The current density of copper is higher than other types of conductor materials.
2. Aluminum :
- Aluminum is cheap compared to copper
- The lightweight is one of the major advantages of the aluminum conductor material
- The cross-section area is large so more alternating current can conduct
- Low tansies strength available in this conductor material
- Higher coefficient of linear expansion
- The conductivity of the aluminum is 60 % less than the copper
- Great wing and also larger cross arm need for this type of conductor materials.
3. Steal Core Aluminum:
- To improve the mechanical strength this type of steel core is added to a number of aluminum conductors.
- Aluminum conductors are reinforced with a core of galvanized steel wire in this type of conductor material.
- Most of the steel core aluminum conductor is fall into ACSR which named as Aluminum Core Steel Reinforced.
- This is a small tower which easies to produce small sag.
4. Galvanized Steel Conductor:
- Got very high mechanical strength in this galvanized steel conductor
- This type of conductors are used for very large spans
- The conductivity of Galvanized steel conductor is poor compared with other conducting materials
- This type of conductor can use where the higher mechanical stress is required
- Due to the characteristic, this type of conductor is not suitable for long-distance transmission lines
- Good for small distance where low power required.
5. Cadmium Copper Conductor:
- This type of conductors are contained higher cost
- The conductor consists of copper with alloyed cadmium materials
- The conductivity is reduced in small percentage
- This type of conductors is used for longer distances
- Small cross-section and the cost is also high.
This short article provides some important pieces of information regarding the properties of conductor materials.
