So many types of electrical motors available on the market and we should have some basic understanding on to select electrical motor according to our purpose. There are two kinds of electrical motors in electrical engineering industry according to its purposes. These two types of motors can classify as
- General purpose motor
- Special purpose motor
General purpose motor: General purpose motors are normally built on the large scale without any specific applications in mind. Normally these motors are low cost, good performance under safety limits and available often in ex-stocks in the market.
Special purpose motors: special purpose motors are built to serve specific applications. A good matching within the motor and the application is done in construction. Normally these types of special purpose motors are higher in cost, got excellent performances and Not available in ex-stock.
When it come to the selection of the motors for a given job, you should seriously consider going for general purpose motor types for obvious reasons.
Size of Selection of motor
Once the type is determined we want to select the size of the motor ( in KW ratings) for the particular task. In here we consider general purpose motors only. This isolation depends on the load due and we can think of the four basic duties such as following.
- Continuous duty
- Variable duty
- Short-time duty
- Intermittent duty
Type of ways to select electrical motor
The selection is refer to the decision among DC motors, Synchronous Motors, Induction motors, brushless DC motors… etc. This is an important decision & it should be taken with a good understanding and practical aspects of different types of motors and their relevant applications.
If the applications have some history so we can go for the type which we use in the past models. But it need not the best and optimum decision to select a motor for the application. We have many types of new motors and new ways of power control, new ways of integrated control, new types of protection. Etc. & our decision can get more broad and open.

Three phase induction motors and brushless dc motors appeared to be more strong conditions in medium range power.
